Design and facilitation of workshops with the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method
A business meeting, a key point of a training path, as well as an important moment in the development of a company or a work group. But a meeting between people with common needs and problems too.
These issues can be managed in different ways; an effective, simple and engaging way is represented by the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method.
Yes, this is precisely the construction game known all over the world, used - in this case - to help people to reflect on problems and to exploit their potential. "Think with your hands" is the slogan of the method, which is based on a robust scientific basis that enhances manual activity, capable of activating different and alternative cognitive processes to traditional ones.
A workshop designed and conducted with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® uses specific techniques that guarantee everyone's participation and the emergence of individual and group potential; everyone can use the bricks and by bricks everyone makes their own contribution, beyond the styles of communication, the professional and cultural profile, each role or position.
A workshop designed and conducted with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is an organized and finalized activity that produces clear, evident and shared results, as a model built with LEGO® is!
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method is widespread and recognized internationally as a support tool for the development of business and management, it is spreading worldwide and is increasingly finding numerous and several applications. There are models of workshops structured for the growth of the work teams, for the support to the construction of business strategies and business models. The method is used to service design, assessment as well social inclusion interventions.
A workshop designed and conducted with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® must be carried out by a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Certified Facilitator. He will be able to design and conduct the intervention in the most appropriate and responsive way to the needs of the participating group, using the official LEGO® materials.
Personally, I have been approaching the method for some years, deepening its characteristics and use cases to get certified as a designer and facilitator of workshops with the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method, in 2016.
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method
• Create your own way to improve your business - a powerful tool designed to improve business performance and innovation
• Take advantage of your organization's hidden experience
• Transforms understanding and awareness into shared commitment and goals
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology is an innovative process designed to improve innovation and business performance. Based on research that demonstrates how this type of "hands-on" and "minds-on" learning produces a deeper and greater understanding of the world and its possibilities, the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology deepens the reflection process and supports a effective dialogue for all. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology is an innovative, experimental process designed to improve innovation and business performance.
"You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than from a lifetime of conversation"
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method is a methodology for the management of workshops aimed at achieving specific objectives; in this sense it is not a training technique but it represents a tool for guiding people and groups through a structured path oriented towards the construction of specific results.
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is based on a robust theoretical approach, based on constructionism and the so-called "concrete thinking": the basic idea is "thinking with your own hands" or using manual action with the famous bricks, to express more effectively individual and group potential in the process of analysis, design and planning.
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®, in particular, guarantees the full participation and expression of all, without any role, communication and skills constraints so as to unlock the potential for creativity, problem solving and experience both individually and in groups.
The spread and success of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® guarantee the effectiveness of the method in multiple situations; the reference methodology is customized based on the needs of each specific group in order to cope with the most varied contexts and objectives. The workshops can be held in business contexts as well as for groups of people with common needs but from different backgrounds; the characteristics of the method allow its application with any type of user: no specific skills are required for the use of the bricks and at the same time everyone has the possibility to use them effectively, for the simplicity and versatility of the LEGO® system.
By way of example, some of the initiatives that can be carried out effectively with the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method are:
• development and consolidation of the work teams,
• development and definition of business strategies,
• identification and sharing of team objectives and strategies,
• change management, for homogeneous groups or work teams,
• (re) definition of personal goals,
• construction and analysis of scenarios,
• analysis of shared attitude systems,
• reconstruction and analysis of user experiences.
Among the specific intervention contexts, always by way of example, we can mention:
• company team, for micro and small businesses, for the development and sharing of common strategies and values / objectives,
• management of medium and large enterprises, for integration, change, strategy development initiatives,
• teamworks, both as a task force and as homogeneous groups, for change or problem solving activities,
• learning contexts, for team building and sharing of training objectives,
• social and work inclusion activities, to support change and deal with specific crises or problems,
• analysis and research, to support and integrate the analysis of perceptions and attitudes.
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshops are designed and conducted by facilitators certified by recognized organizations and internationally; this guarantees adherence to the methodology and, therefore, the effectiveness and quality of the design and facilitation actions.
